Obama Seeks to Bridge Western with Islamic World

In Politics on April 6, 2009 at 23:49

obama-turkeyUS president Barack Obama visited Turkey the past two days, in his first appearance in a Muslim nation, in an effort to strengthen the ties between the two countries and convey a sound message; “the US is not and will never be at war with Islam.”

Obama mentioned in his speech that Turkey “is not where East and West divide — it is where they come together.” The US sees Turkey as a strong ally and fully supports its accession in the EU. Accession talks began in 2004 but little progress has been made with democratic reforms.

Moreover, the American president was brave enough to touch upon the issue between Turkey and Armenia, to urge them to leave their past behind and push for normalization of relations of the two countries. President Obama stays put that Turkey’s act against the Armenians in WW1 was a genocide based on “widely documented facts supported by an overwhelming body of historical evidence.”

Obama made a huge step to reach out for the Muslim world. Some in Washington say he went too far. Succeeding in the war on terror postulates that Western countries shall embrace the Muslim world. I can’t seem to remember any other American president talking so ‘warmly’ for the Muslim community. Is it because Barack is partly Muslim too and his middle name is Hussein? May be, but who cares…
